Open Educational Badges (OEB) originated from a research project and is now actively used by many organizations in their daily operations. To ensure the long-term development of OEB, we rely on a sustainable funding model.

A Didactic Perspective

Badges offer wonderful opportunities to support learners, particularly in areas such as career orientation or extracurricular engagement. They are exceptionally well-suited for competency-oriented feedback because they do more than just document attendance — they provide a concrete description of the specific skills or competencies acquired.

When creating a badge, individual issuance criteria can be defined. Additionally, badges can be linked to evidence, such as links to project work, reflections, or learner documentation.

Competency Frameworks

This allows for the use of school-specific or internal criteria. By default, OEB utilizes the European ESCO framework (European Skills, Competences, Qualifications and Occupations). With over 14,000 listed competencies, ESCO ensures that badges remain comparable across different institutions. Additionally, you have the flexibility to embed your own custom-defined competencies within the badges.

Backpack/Wallet

Learners receive their badges via email. They can create an OEB account to collect all their badges in their personal “backpack” (wallet). This is also where they build their competency profile: it aggregates all verified competencies from various learning units, providing a solid foundation for career orientation.

In addition, badges can be organized into curated collections and shared directly for job applications.

Use Cases / Examples in Practice

Various schools are already using OEB, for example

The German Federal Environment Ministry’s learning platform, Umwelt im Unterricht uses badges to make ESD competencies visible. Similarly, platforms offering digital self-paced learning journeys on ESD topics, such as Klima Camus, also issue Open Educational Bagdes.
To visualize acquired ESD competencies, a specialized feature will soon be available in the OEB learner profile – details can be found here in our blog post on badge usage at Klima Campus. These types of “bubbles”—currently used for ESD and Future Skills—can essentially be implemented to visualize any other competency framework as well.

Technical Integration

OEB can be used directly via the platform or through our plugins (Moodle/WordPress). Thanks to our open API, organizations can also access OEB data and functions directly from within their own systems.
